Bring your résumé to #JOU3109 lecture on Thursday for in-lecture workshop

lab2_directionsThanks to everyone who was in lecture on Tuesday for a good start of the semester.

I hope you have a better understanding of your goals for the course and have identified parts of the course that you are particularly excited about.

Please read through the course syllabus — posted on the Documents page. We’ll use the first few minutes of class on Thursday to see what questions you have about the course.

Our main focus in Thursday’s lecture will be helping you develop an effective résumé and cover letter for a communications-related internship, job or volunteer opportunity. The résumé and cover letter will be your graded assignments for Lab 2.

  • Read the directions for Lab 2. lab2_directions_F14
  • The Lab 2 directions include links to two YouTube videos I created that provide guidelines about résumés and cover letters. Because I’ve provided this guidance in these videos, I won’t be going over all this same information in lecture.
  • I’ve provided a Q&A of some of the questions that students often have about writing résumés and cover letters. You may find answers to some of your questions about this assignment. lab2_qa
  • Bring a printed copy of your résumé to lecture on Thursday for a workshop on résumé writing.
  • Read Chap. 22 in “Writing and Reporting News.” The chapter includes a sample résumé and also several sample cover letters that you can use for reference.

Here’s the rubric that we’ll be using to evaluate your résumé and cover letter — lab2_rubric
